Learning about sharing

When my son turned three, we ventured into the wonderful world of ‘sharing’.

Before then, Wonder Boy had usually just cried, prompting retrieval of said stolen object, or just turned and played with the next wonderful thing that was next to him.

But at three, things changed.

He got possessive.

He got the concept of ‘mine’.

He started wanting all of the toys.

He and his friends started fighting over toys, prompting give backs, waitsies, and the “If you can’t share, it’s mine” commentary.

Now, in all fairness, my Wonder Boy has always been a gracious host, offering to share snacks, Legos and that toy he didn’t want to play with as much with his good friends. I’m proud at how well he handles some situations.

But sharing, at playdates, is a process constantly being worked on, with the current concept of a toy he wants being that he can walk over and demand the kid to share, prompting a quick handover.

Almost, kid.

I’ve talked about Recess Music before here at Sunshine Wonderland, and am happy they are releasing a new compilation that is perfect for my son’s needs.

Share! has songs from artists I’ve written about here before and some everyone would be familiar with. For instance, here is Homemade Cookie from “Share” sung by Noel Paul Stookey (also known as Paul from Peter Paul and Mary!)

The songs on this album are great, ranging from sharing a treat, being a gracious host when someone is over at your house, and even growing enough green beans to share with the world.

It’s lessons for sharing between friends, in families, and learning to share with the whole world.

One of my favorites is “I’m so Proud Of You” by Anna Moo. Both Mr. Wonder and I have a habit of complimenting our s0n when he is doing something right (because we always get after him for doing something wrong) and feel that is important to share the positive with him.

The last time one of his best buddies was over I played the album for them during snack, hoping by osmosis that some of the ideas would enter their car-and-superhero-filled minds. That was one of our more peaceful playdates, so I think it did do a little good.

This album would be great for playdates, long car rides, and for preschools or meetups.

You can preorder Share! for $10 here on their site from now through March 26. I recommend browsing their other three albums to see if any others interest you- I’m sure one will!

You can follow Recess Music on Facebook and on Twitter!
