I’ve had a photo project in mind for a while.
I even started it, back in 2005 when I was freelancing and interning at the San Bernardino Sun. The amount of roadside memorials I drove by on my way to stories intrigued me, as did the decorations, weathering, and locations.
Even though my big for a photo essay didn’t work out, I’ve had some photo images in mind as I still drove past roadside memorials, some of them still there from 2005.
I’ve realized I haven’t been picking up the camera, lately, mostly because I have two small children and no time to go out and find things to shoot. Even taking pictures of the kids can be a challenge except in the safety of my own home and granted, while I have two of the cutest kids ever, it wasn’t what I wanted to present myself as exclusively.
I have been much more than that.
Remember House of Style on MTV? Back when it was mostly music videos? Cindy Crawford interviewed an artist who shot black and white images and then stuck driftwood on them and painted on them with blood. Macabre, yet inspired.
I wanted to find something that inspired as well- something I am still looking for.
I know it was from that and my taste for horror that I can dance on the dark side occasionally- something someone with a blog title like ‘Sunshine Wonderland’ doesn’t sound at all like.
Just remember how mad everyone was actually in Wonderland. A place of wonders is sunshine and shadows.
So I decided, instead of just hunting down my roadside memorials and creeping some people out I would broaden the subject and create a bigger challenge for myself.
To find inspiration on the side of the road.
Whatever I drive by- if I can pull over for 30 seconds and it inspires me, I will do it.
or I will come back when I can and hope that moment is repeated.
The rules are simple. It must be visible from the road and accessible easily from my parked car.
If I can’t get the shot quickly, I have to move on.
I will only be using my iPhone 4S. All editing will be done on the phone as well.
I will be presenting via Flickr what I find alongside the road on my travels to and from… whenever. Or if I have a free moment, when I jump in the car and run if I know the light’s right.
Then I will be sharing the story behind it here. Where it is, any background information- why I took the picture.
Whatever I find on the side of the road.
